Kiln hire & lessons

Please note I don't currently offer lessons on the pottery wheel, only on electric kiln use.

Kiln hire

**August 2025 - kiln hire is currently fully booked and now on hold until after I have relocated my studio to Cornwall in the autumn**

I offer kiln firing services from my studio located in Ardeley, Stevenage, SG2 7AH.

Limited spots are available each month which take place between firings for my own work.

Please note I have a small kiln and cannot fire large items. Please read all details and conditions below before getting in contact to book your firing. Thanks!

Kiln details

  • Nabertherm 45L top loading electric kiln
  • Purchased new May 2023
  • 2-3 shelf capacity (depending on height of items)
  • Shelf size guide - for a glaze firing will fit 7 large mugs, for example.

Firing temperatures

I use pre-set firing schedules only:

  • Bisque: 950°C
  • Earthenware glaze firing: 1050°C
  • Stoneware glaze firing: 1150 or 1250°C

Hire details

  • The kiln is available to be hired as a whole or by the shelf (my kiln will fit 2 x 10cm height shelves and one 5cm height shelf in total).
  • Whole - £25 per firing (bisque or glaze)
  • By the shelf - £10 (bisque or glaze).
  • If an extra tall shelf is needed, 2 shelves will need to be hired at £20.
  • Items can be dropped off and collected on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays.

Hire rules and conditions

  • Commercial clay and glazes only.
  • All items for bisque firing must be fully bone dry on drop-off. If any moisture remains this will delay the firing.
  • Clay cookies or stilts to be used under all items during glaze firings (to be provided by the hirer - these can be bone dry greenware or previously fired cookies).
  • The kiln will be for hire only when no signs of kiln element or thermocouple maintenance are shown or due, but no results can be guaranteed and all items are fired at the makers' own risk.

Kiln lessons

(Please note I don't currently offer lessons on the pottery wheel)

I offer introductory lessons covering the best practice and maintenance of electric kilns. This is suitable for any potter who would like to know more about the firing process (e.g. if you currently use a community studio and do not get access to the kiln) or are considering buying your own kiln.

Lessons are one-to-one and can either be in-person at my studio at Church farm, Ardeley, Stevenage, SG2 7AH, or online over Zoom/Teams.

I currently have a Nabertherm 45L electric kiln which will be used to demo.

A lesson lasts approx 1 hour and costs £25.
